⭐ OUR WHY: ⭐

Music education is a central part of a student’s education, supporting students' academic and social success. The Do Re Mi Project plays a critical role in promoting educational equity and supporting youth development. Our high school volunteer tutors provide free, one-on-one music instruction to elementary and middle school students who can't afford private lessons, inspiring these students to grow on their instruments, audition for and join youth ensembles, and perform in our virtual recitals and in-person nursing home concerts. By providing personalized music education to underserved students worldwide, Do Re Mi works to ensure that every student is able to experience the joy of learning and experiencing music. [1]

For many young students, music class is a welcoming environment where they can express themselves freely and grow with support. The Do Re Mi Project helps further this sense of belonging by fostering a collaborative environment that builds meaningful peer relationships. A highlight of our program is that our tutors are high school students who remember what it’s like to be a young musician, allowing them to deeply relate to their students and build connections that go beyond a typical teacher-student relationship. For many of our students, their tutor becomes a source of stability and encouragement. And for many tutors, their meaningful experiences teaching younger students inspires them to pursue music education in college and professionally.

Across the country, music educators are seeing firsthand how limited access to practice time, private instruction, and family support affects students’ ability to grow as musicians. To better understand these challenges, our Recruitment Directors conducted nationwide outreach and interviewed music teachers from a range of schools and community programs. By gathering perspectives on inequities in funding, transportation, and family support that limit student participation, we were able to identify common struggles students face and tailor our work to solve them.

At one high school in West Chester, Pennsylvania, the school’s orchestra director explained that although nearly 30% of her students express strong interest in learning an instrument, only about 10% are able to take private lessons due to financial and transportation barriers. These inequities are evident at the elementary level as well. At another elementary school in the Philadelphia metropolitan area, the band director noted that only 5-10% of his students are able to receive private instruction, and less than 5% of highly interested students can access lessons outside of school. He explained that many families struggle with time management and transportation, making after-school lessons inaccessible. National trends mirror this: according to the Arts Education Data Project, more than 3.6 million public school students in the U.S. lack access to music education altogether. The Do Re Mi Project’s flexible lesson model directly supports these families, providing instruction during hours that work for busy households while ensuring that students receive the focused attention they need. [2]

By removing cost barriers, the Do Re Mi Project expands participation in music and ensures that students’ music opportunities are shaped by their passion rather than their financial situation. In addition to personalized lessons, our students are able to develop their skills through free masterclasses with professional musicians and our annual Accelerando Scholarships, which have been incredibly meaningful for recipients, allowing them to experience their first classical music concerts, buy sheet music, or repair their instruments.

The Do Re Mi Project expands access to music lessons for students who otherwise might never have the chance to pursue music. Our individualized lesson model removes financial and logistical barriers, ensuring students can learn from passionate instructors without worrying about household income or access to transportation. We believe that every child deserves access to the creativity and community that music provides. Through the Do Re Mi Project, we make that belief a reality—one lesson, one student, and one tutor at a time. 💙
